My Journey

Sometimes as a child I would slowly wake up, excited about the day ahead. Decades later I caught myself repeating my 'why' multiple times a workday to get on with my do-outs. I later caught myself taking paths of least resistance in a tricky workplace culture. I also grappled with seasonal affect disorder throughout and became acutely aware of when color would start to drain out of my world.

Grit and tenacity got me through my first quarter-century of life. Curiosity, knowledge, compassion, and choice carried me through much of my next quarter-century. I take my knowledge, my years of exposure in three very different sectors, and my commitment to building an ever-better world. I layer this with an ability to deeply tune into others, extensive coach training, and my passion for the quirky human spirit, and collaborate with clients on building journeys and teams they love and lives of impact.

I am a purpose-fueled woman. In the '90s, I wanted to make U.S. foreign policy more globally fair and secured my first permanent job with a member of the U.S. Congress. Then, believing economic interdependence begets greater world peace, I moved to a global-commerce-supporting Executive Branch Agency. Six years into DC, I realized I wanted to know more of the world (and was grappling with burnout, I recognize in retrospect), secured a fellowship to graduate school, and learned to take surf breaks while studying hard in San Diego. From there, I advised a Fortune 100 corporation on communications and corporate responsibility strategy, then directed communications for a coalition of international nonprofits. I currently split my time between helping executives of these nonprofits advance their organizations in a wildly changing world and helping individuals and teams advance themselves through coaching and workshops.

Looking back, I could have custom-fitted and grown further in all of my jobs. The leaps between sectors and the soul-pinching discomfort of trying to excel as a generic high achiever put my energy towards frenetic stress. Now, I create impact using my unique Deborah'ness. Shaping a life I love was always within me—I just had to listen to and trust my wisdom, learn my uniqueness, and skill up to navigate others as they are.

I create a kinder, more intentional, more connected world. I work with the brave-hearted among us to step into our light and shine. Let's figure out where you are being drained, fix it, make work fit you, and live your unique impact. Act to live a life and make an impact that you love. Join me?
